Aaron Ellingsen > Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Burned out Knobcone Pines loom in the fog, with Beargrass dotting the landscape as well.
Aaron Ellingsen > Inside the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, where 7 years ago the Biscuit Fire Complex burned nearly 500,000 acres including the entire wilderness area. Please view the original sized image for better detail of the devastation.
Aaron Ellingsen > One of the very few surviving pines after the fire. Stunted and twisted, it somehow has eked out a living in a very harsh environment. This tree is only about 5 feet tall, but may very well be close to a hundred years old.
Aaron Ellingsen > More tortured and twisted pines killed by the forest fire. Knobcone Pines only drop their seed cones after being killed by fire; the extreme heat signals the weather tight shells of the cones to open. Shrubby Tanoaks are making a comeback, but no signs of Pine seedlings yet after 7 years.
Aaron Ellingsen > In my opinion this was one of the most surreal scenes I have ever witnessed in nature. I hiked for miles through this area, and it literally was a sea of Azaleas and other wildflowers. The juxtoposition of the vibrant colors against the foggy skeleton trees for as far as you could see was a truly strange experience.
Aaron Ellingsen > Indian Paintbrush was one of the more prolific wildflowers to make a comeback. Notice how steep the terrain is here. It made off-trail hiking quite a chore.
Aaron Ellingsen > More wildflowers in this strange garden of death and regrowth.
Aaron Ellingsen > A 3 hour exposure from high in the Rogue Wilderness Area. The lights in the distance are from the cities of Grant's Pass, Medford, and Ashland; 40, 60, and 75 miles away respectively. The lights are not perceptible to the naked eye, and only show via the gathering of light over 180 minutes of exposure.
Aaron Ellingsen > My youngest brother, Will. Taken just as the sun rose over the mountains to the East.
